A style or category of film; each type of film are recognised by different people who like different kinds of films. Each one has codes and conventions, these are used to meet audience expectations. If the film does not meet audience expectations, the audience will be disappointed.
A text is classified in a genre through the identification of key elements which occur in the text and in others of the same genre. These elements are referred to as codes and conventions.
Audiences recognise these paradigms and bring expectations of the genre.
Films are arranged by genre in a shop for example making it easier to find what you are particularly looking for.

Comedy
For this image we used props from the design and technology rooms. We were going to use it as the Sci-Fi genre but we figured it was more comedy as we look happy and Sci-Fi is known to be a bit mysterious and out of the ordinary. the background isn't the best as we couldn't move anything around, however I think we used the equipment available in that department quite well to demonstrate the comedy side of things. Also there is high key lighting used which is usually used for more up beat films. The high key lighting wouldn't make the film look mysterious. we have deliberately taken the picture with us in the centre to show the main characters. To make this better we could have made it actually funny rather than looking silly, however I think the looks on our faces and our body language help the genre become a little bit more obvious.
Action
In this image we used the school playground as our setting and used the skip to help as a prop. We are using the skip as cover and pointing into the distance as if we have seen something to look out for, hence why we are hiding. It is easy to tell by our body language that we have seen something but however are trying to keep under cover at the same time. If this was in a film it would cause a sort of tension as the audience wouldn't know what we had seen. Again in this image, there is high key lighting, this means it is more natural and realistic to our eyes. This proves it wouldn't be mysterious or jumpy. The skip is centred and blue. This could portray that seeing as the skip is the biggest object in the image, it could be the most important, or it either plays an important part in the film. The blue of the skip could represent a calm atmosphere however our body language could prove different. Myself and Liv are either side of the skip showing that it is protecting us from whatever we have seen in the distance.
Sci-Fi
We have chosen this image for the Sci-Fi genre as it could show how she has just woken up in a parallel universe and she doesn't know where she is which also makes her feel trapped. For this image we used the gate of the bike shed to make it look like Liv is locked in somewhere. Her facial expression is very blank and almost looks a bit scared and worried. Her body language with her hands holding onto the gate shows how she really wants to be set free but she feels trapped and feels as though there is no way out. For this image the lighting is more low key; this produces sharp contrasts between light and dark areas of an image. It is clear that herself and the gate both look dark, however the background of sky behind her looks lighter even though it is grey. We have deliberately centred her behind the gate as we felt as though it was the most important part. How did she get there? Does she get out?
Horror
This image represents our horror genre. We have positioned the eye in the middle of a peep hole to make it look more eerie. Low key lighting is used for a mysterious effect. As you cant see the rest of her face, it makes the image look creepy which matches the genre we have chosen for this image. The main body of the image is all dark however the eye creates a contrast as it is light and the foreground around it is black. There are shadows in the eye creating a more mysterious atmosphere. Where are the shadows coming from? what are they?
