Practise edit

Practise Edit Practise edit: Music video/ James Bond.

This is my practice edit. The software I used to create this was Adobe Premiere Pro. I enjoyed editing this clips once I got the hang of the software. I had never used it before we did the practice edit so didn't know what to do and found it quite difficult to start with. The first task we got given was to put images and dancing animals behind audio and create a music video. I used the song 'Get Ready' for this task. We had to play around with all the tools to edit the images in the best way possible to match the music. The next thing we had to do was to edit James Bond clips into the theme tunes or even cut out the music and play the talking with the clips. I played around with all the tools which is how I came out with my final outcome of the edit. I learnt to fade out the audio and to flash back to either black or white. I think this would have been more successful if I was to have my own footage as I would know when I wanted to crop/ cut it etc.

Film Pitch- Viking film

Film Pitch

As part of our work on genre, we had to create a film pitch for a historical genre. Marcus, Max and I decided to do a Viking film to match our genre. It was called 'The adventures or Terence'. We had two lessons to plan a film based around the genre we were given and to add cast to our film. We presented our film to the class and got feedback in the ranges of 6/8 out of 10 for each different category. Most of the critical comments were about the title of our film, it didn't relate to the film apart from the main Viking being called Terence and it also didn't relate to the genre very well. Our cast list also wasn't very well thought through. For example, Daniel-Day Lewis is a very well known actor and he was put as the second main character. He would have been to good for this casting so it wasn't very accurate. However the story line made sense and was as interesting as a Viking film could have been. We didn't have very original marketing ideas either. If we were to do this task again I would have preferred a different genre as I think the historical genre was very hard but if we had the same genre I would change the name of the film and also re-think the cast list. I would also try to come up with better and more original marketing ideas to promote our film better.

Setting- In the cellar/ house. It is set indoors in a house set in the USA. It is set to be end of October/ November. The house is old and the cellar door opened on its own. (Spirits) however this could also portray the age of the house as the doors aren't secure anymore or the weather outside, e.g it may be windy. There is low key lighting to create a mysterious feel to the film. There are floorboards and creaky doors/ windows. It is filmed in both day and night however there is rarely any haunting until night.

Theme- The themes in The conjuring include haunts, the sounds and tension in the film are due to the spirits in the house. This isn't an every day occurrence, it conveys that there is something not quite right with the house/ family.

Icons- The doll, the hanging rope from the tree at the end of the garden, the book/ necklace for the exorcism. Also, all the clocks stopping at 3.07 am every night/ early morning is also a very important icon for the people watching the film.

Narrative- The story gets underway as paranormal researchers Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) evaluate a mysterious doll discovered by a trio of young roommates in 1968. Believing their house to be haunted by the wayward spirit of a deceased young girl, they give the girl permission to inhabit the doll, and soon their lives become a waking nightmare. Informed by Ed and Lorraine that they have fallen victim to an inhuman spirit (aka a demon) seeking a human host, the roommates entrust the doll to the Warrens, who place it in their personal museum for safekeeping. Flash forward three years to Harrisville, RI, where the Perron family have just moved into their country dream home ; an 18th century farmhouse that offers plenty of space for parents Carolyn (Lili Taylor) and Roger (Ron Livingston), as well as their five daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April. It seems like the ideal place to raise a family until a series of unsettling events leave the Perron family convinced they are not alone. Terrified, Carolyn reaches out to the Warrens for help, and learns that a demonic entity has attached itself to her family, and has no intentions of letting them go. Meanwhile, the deeper the Warrens delve into the farmhouse's history, the clearer it becomes that this spirit has a murderous agenda, and that no one will be safe until it is driven back into darkness.

The characters:
  • mother- Carolyn
  • father- Roger
  • 5 daughters: Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy and April
  • paranormal researchers- Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Textual analysis- Low key lighting is used to make the film seem more mysterious. Throughout the film there are many different eerie sounds to create tension.

Narrative

Narrative

5 stages of narrative:

Equilibrium- setting Is established.

Disruption- story takes a particular direction.

Recognition of disruption- characters and events are interwoven.

Attempt to repair disruption- try to solve the issue.

Reinstatement of equilibrium- matters are sorted out, problems solved and questions answered.

Vladimir Propp:

Propp suggested that in any story there are only ever a limited number of character types. Each of whom have their own purpose in the narrative.

Hero- main characters around which the narrative is centred- mission or quest?

Heroine or princess- acts as a reward for the hero succeeding in the mission/ quest.

Princesses father- hero must win approval from father to win the princess.

Villain- stops the hero from succeeding mission/ quest.

Helper- accompanies the hero, doesn't always complete the quest.

The Equilibrium in Matilda is in a friendly neighbourhood in the Wormwoods home. The local library,  the school and Miss Honey's house also play a large part in the film.

The disruption is when Matilda asks her father if she can go to school, he finds a school with a really strict head teacher and she begins to get punished for being smart and for not being similar to the rest of her family. Soon the police get involved and threaten that she should be put in an orphanage, however she gathers powers and begins to play around with her family's minds.

The recognition of disruption takes place when Matilda is born, she is born into a family who don't appreciate her or her many talents. When she starts school there is only one teacher who realises she has a lot of potential, Miss Honey. The scene when Matilda is in Miss Trunchable's house creates a lot of tension. E.g, will they get out safely? Does she find them?

Later on in the film, Matilda's parents decide they are moving abroad and give Matilda no notice, however as they come to pick her up she is at Miss Honey's house and asks if she will adopt her. This is the attempt to repair disruption.

Soon after Miss Honey has adopted Matilda and her parents have moved away, everything starts looking up for Matilda. Miss Trunchable quit the school, Matilda and Miss Honey now have a beautiful house and they go out for picnics in the park etc. This is the reinstatement of equilibrium.

Mise En Scene

Mise En Scene

This is a French term meaning 'what is in the scene'
Essentially it is information in front of the camera for the audience to help them work out what is going on.

Mise En Scene is made up of five elements:
  • settings and props
  • costume, hair and make up
  • facial expressions and body language
  • lighting and colour
  • positioning of characters/ object within a frame
Types of lighting:
  • low key lighting
  • high key lighting
Low key lighting is when only the key and back lights are used. It produces sharp contrasts of light in dark areas and also creates deep, distinct shadows.

High key lighting is when more 'filler lights' are used. The light is natural and realistic to our eyes. They are used to produce a brightly lit set or to create the affect of a sunny day.

Iconography is used when describing recognisable buildings in scenes/ the setting of a film etc.

Genre

Genre:

A style or category of film; each type of film are recognised by different people who like different kinds of films. Each one has codes and conventions, these are used to meet audience expectations. If the film does not meet audience expectations, the audience will be disappointed.

A text is classified in a genre through the identification of key elements which occur in the text and in others of the same genre. These elements are referred to as codes and conventions.
Audiences recognise these paradigms and bring expectations of the genre.

Films are arranged by genre in a shop for example making it easier to find what you are particularly looking for.

Types of genre:
  •  Western
  • Drama
  • Rom-com
  • Comedy
  • Fantasy
  • Children's
  • Horror
  • Drama (family relationships)
  • War
  • Action/ adventure
  • Sport films
  • Animations
  • Thriller
  • Sci-fi

Comedy

For this image we used props from the design and technology rooms. We were going to use it as the Sci-Fi genre but we figured it was more comedy as we look happy and Sci-Fi is known to be a bit mysterious and out of the ordinary. the background isn't the best as we couldn't move anything around, however I think we used the equipment available in that department quite well to demonstrate the comedy side of things. Also there is high key lighting used which is usually used for more up beat films. The high key lighting wouldn't make the film look mysterious. we have deliberately taken the picture with us in the centre to show the main characters. To make this better we could have made it actually funny rather than looking silly, however I think the looks on our faces and our body language help the genre become a little bit more obvious.

Action

In this image we used the school playground as our setting and used the skip to help as a prop. We are using the skip as cover and pointing into the distance as if we have seen something to look out for, hence why we are hiding. It is easy to tell  by our body language that we have seen something but however are trying to keep under cover at the same time. If this was in a film it would cause a sort of tension as the audience wouldn't know what we had seen. Again in this image, there is high key lighting, this means it is more natural and realistic to our eyes. This proves it wouldn't be mysterious or jumpy. The skip is centred and blue. This could portray that seeing as the skip is the biggest object in the image, it could be the most important, or it either plays an important part in the film. The blue of the skip could represent a calm atmosphere however our body language could prove different. Myself and Liv are either side of the skip showing that it is protecting us from whatever we have seen in the distance.

Sci-Fi

We have chosen this image for the Sci-Fi genre as it could show how she has just woken up in a parallel universe and she doesn't know where she is which also makes her feel trapped. For this image we used the gate of the bike shed to make it look like Liv is locked in somewhere. Her facial expression is very blank and almost looks a bit scared and worried. Her body language with her hands holding onto the gate shows how she really wants to be set free but she feels trapped and feels as though there is no way out. For this image the lighting is more low key; this produces sharp contrasts between light and dark areas of an image. It is clear that herself and the gate both look dark, however the background of sky behind her looks lighter even though it is grey. We have deliberately centred her behind the gate as we felt as though it was the most important part. How did she get there? Does she get out?

Horror

This image represents our horror genre. We have positioned the eye in the middle of a peep hole to make it look more eerie. Low key lighting is used for a mysterious effect. As you cant see the rest of her face, it makes the image look creepy which matches the genre we have chosen for this image. The main body of the image is all dark however the eye creates a contrast as it is light and the foreground around it is black. There are shadows in the eye creating a more mysterious atmosphere. Where are the shadows coming from? what are they?

Rom-com

Semiotics

Semiotics

The study of signs and also anything that stands for something else.

We read images and pictures in an atempt to decode them and make sense of what they mean to us.

Denotation- what we see when we look at an image (what it is.)

Connotation- what we understand from an image (what other meanings it has.)

The blue sky in the background of the image creates a relaxed atmosphere. The light blue of the sky at the top of the image contrasts with the darker, bolder colour towards the bottom of the image. The darker colours represents a dull and boring atmosphere as there is nothing going on, however the sun brightens up the dullness and portrays happiness. On the left hand side of the image it is clear that the sun is setting. This could be a happy thing as it is the end of the day and a new day will be beginning. The sun is placed in between the two main characters, this is so it draws attention to the people in the image as they are the main focus. It is obvious that the girl is smiling directly at the boy, this shows that she is very happy to be with him and how they also really like each other by the way he has his hand placed on her neck. This shows love between the two. Their noses are also touching, this shows they are comfortable in each others company and they are also very happy to be together at that particular time.  At the bottom of the image we can notice the sea on the sand, the sound of the waves lapping on the shore would make you feel tranquil as it is natural and peaceful.

Film Opening Analysis

This opening it is set in a desert, on a train. Mr potato head is set out to look like a criminal, stealing all the money from the train. The train sets on fire and Woody is sent to the rescue, the train doesnt brake in time before it is tipped over the edge however Buzz comes beneath the train and lifts it up and everyone is saved, the bad people are then left behind and the Toy Story characters continue their journey without them.

In the opening scene it is clear that the weather is nice, the blue sky could represent a relaxed atmosphere however the body language of the rest of the characters could prove different.
